Camshaft Working Principles
- The camshaft rotates in sync with the crankshaft
- Controls the exact opening and closing timing of intake and exhaust valves
- Ensures proper air-fuel mixture enters the combustion chamber
- Regulates exhaust flow for stable power output
- Maintains combustion efficiency during:
- Load changes
- Starting and acceleration
- Extended running periods
A reliable camshaft helps maintain smooth engine performance, prevents timing failure, and reduces customer complaints.

The camshaft is a key engine part in a gasoline generator.
Its main job is to control the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves at the correct time, so that:
-
• Fresh air–fuel mixture can enter the cylinder
-
• Exhaust gas can leave the cylinder
-
• The engine runs smoothly and produces stable power
In a generator engine, if the camshaft wears out or goes out of timing, the engine may:
-
• Become hard to start
-
• Lose power under load
-
• Run with unstable RPM or strange knocking noises

How the Camshaft Works
Inside the engine, the crankshaft drives the camshaft through gears or a chain.
As the camshaft rotates, the cam lobes push the valve train (rocker arms, valves) to open and close at precise moments.
-
Correct timing = smooth combustion, stable output
-
Wrong timing = misfire, backfiring, weak power, high fuel consumption
That’s why using a reliable, well-machined camshaft is important for generator performance and service life.

Some camshafts use a nylon (engineering plastic) gear on the camshaft:
Advantages:
Nylon gear runs more quietly than a steel gear, helping reduce overall mechanical noise.
Less rotating mass, easier for the engine to spin.
Generally cheaper to produce, suitable for light and medium-duty generators.
Limitations:
Lower heat and impact resistance compared with steel
More sensitive to very high temperatures or severe overload
In long-term heavy-duty usage, nylon teeth may wear faster than steel
Nylon gear camshafts are usually used in home backup generators, light-duty portable units, and applications where low noise and cost are more important than extreme durability.
